Our first store was in a shed and opened [in] August, 2016, built by volunteers, 60 community members. In the new factory, we honour them. We've hired between 30 to 35 people. What my father spent 30 years building in Syria, I think it can be done in five years because of the huge support. Canada is very kind, why we have maple leaf shapes. We started a conversation with duty-free shops, but can't keep up with orders we have. We are working days and nights. The 2018 plan is huge.

The Hadhad family, operators of Antigonish-based Peace by Chocolate, have got their treats into Sobey’s stores across the Maritimes in time for the holidays. Next year, they intend to expand nationally and into the U.S. All of this comes less than 18 months after the Syrian chocolatiers began operating in Canada.
The Hadhads arrived in Nova Scotia as refugees from Syria and formed Peace by Chocolate in a small barn in Antigonish in August 2016. Success was immediate and accelerated when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the chocolate in a speech he gave to the United Nations in the fall of that year. Trudeau’s praise precipitated so many orders the company was forced to shut down its website for a while. READ MORE

For the first time in our history, we visited Ottawa to present our story to Members of Parliaments from 51 countries across the globe at the Fourth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians entitled Young parliamentarians as drivers of inclusion that took place in Ottawa, Canada, on 17 and 18 November 2017.
The conference was also attended by representatives of youth associations, indigenous communities, civil society organisations, private sector companies, and international agencies.
The founder of Peace by Chocolate Tareq Hadhad was on a panel on the first day of the conference and he walked the attendees through the story of Peace by Chocolate and the family's positive example to the world.

"No one chooses where to be born. Every young person should have a place to call home, it is a basic right. It is our duty to treat migrants and refugees with empathy, dignity and respect. As young people ourselves, we know that migration is an opportunity for individuals, for families, and for our countries. It can bring significant economic, social and cultural benefits to host countries as well as income to countries of origin", these were words from the final document of the conference in lights of Peace by Chocolate story.
The family of Peace by Chocolate couldn't be more honored and grateful for the kind invitation and will continue to share the story of peace and hope with the world because "One Peace Won't Hurt".
Peace By Chocolate has begun shipping boxes of the sweet Syrian traditional treats from their new production facility in Antigonish to Sobeys stores in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.
Sobeys stores in Newfoundland will begin receiving the boxes on Dec. 4. Sobeys offers mixed boxes of either 10 or 15 chocolates.
“Sobeys is thrilled to see the product on our shelves for Atlantic Canadians to enjoy – just in time for the holiday season,” said Paul MacLeod, vice president, Atlantic Store Operations. “This has been a very special partnership for us. What started out as a meeting at a local farmers market has turned into a strong partnership. Customers have been excited for months about Peace By Chocolate coming to our stores.” READ MORE
It’s a long way from a refugee camp in the Middle East to a chocolate factory in Atlantic Canada. But for the Hadhad family, it’s been a smooth transition.

Isam Hadhad and his family, Syrian refugees from the war that destroyed their factory and home, found a “community of the heart” in a small town.
Before the missiles came and destroyed his family’s chocolate factory in Damascus in early 2013, pretty much the only thing Tareq Hadhad knew about Canada was the little he’d picked up from MTV.
A young entrepreneur who moved from Syria to Antigonish, N.S., less than two years ago with his family has just been appointed to the Invest Nova Scotia board of directors.
Tareq Hadhad will serve on the Invest Nova Scotia Board for a four- year term.
“We are thrilled to add Tareq to our team, given his unique experience and perspective,” said Kenneth Deveau, chair of Invest Nova Scotia in a news release. READ MORE
